Senate Republicans Proved Today: Senate Democrats Must Reform the Filibuster

"There’s Only One Path Forward on Voting Rights," said Christina Harvey, Executive Director of Stand Up America.
WASHINGTON -
Today, Senate Republicans once again filibustered even debating the Freedom to Vote Act, a compromise version of the For the People Act spearheaded by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) in an effort to win support from enough Senate Republicans to overcome the filibuster and pass the bill.

Stand Up America Executive Director Christina Harvey responded to the news of the filibuster:

“Sen. Manchin has exhausted every possible means of passing this bill on a bipartisan basis, and the American public has patiently waited while he has attempted to win support from an immovable Republican caucus. In the meantime, the window was left wide open for Republicans to jam anti-voter legislation through the Texas legislature.

“There is no compromise voting rights bill that will appease Senate Republicans, and today’s filibuster made that clear. Senator Manchin tried. It didn’t work. Now, we’re out of time. The only way to pass comprehensive voting rights legislation and safeguard our freedom to vote is to end the Jim Crow filibuster.

“It’s time for President Biden and Majority Leader Schumer to unify Senate Democrats on filibuster reform, and it’s time for Sen. Manchin and the handful of others in his camp to embrace the only path forward. Democrats must deliver on the agenda they promised on the campaign trail, including protecting our freedom to vote.”
