Keystone XL Pipeline Approval Shows Shameful Disregard for Public Health and Climate Stability – The Fight Will Continue

Statement of Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch

WASHINGTON - This morning the Nebraska Public Service Commission voted to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which may represent a go-ahead for the TransCanada corporation to begin construction of the controversial oil pipeline. In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:

“We are angered and alarmed by today’s vote to enable this foolhardy pipeline, a monument to the disaster-prone fossil fuel systems that threaten public health, our environment, and the long-term livability of our planet. Canadian tar sands are one of the most environmentally degrading forms of energy known to man. That the Trump administration and the Nebraska Public Service Commission would choose to peddle this filthy substance is downright shameful.

“This pipeline is not just foolish, but also unjust. It threatens the lands and culture of numerous Indigenous communities, as well as scores of landowners that have been ignored and marginalized in the approval process.

“There’s no doubt that today’s decision is a big setback for common-sense environmental protection and rational climate stewardship. But we’re not quitting. We will support any and all legal avenues to ensure this pipeline never carries a single barrel of tar sands oil through it.”
