“This Proposal Would Re-Open a Pollution Loophole Big Enough to Drive a Truck Through.”

WASHINGTON - The Trump Administration is considering repealing a rule limiting pollution from refurbished heavy-duty trucks. The rule as it currently stands requires that  “gliders,” -- trucks reconstructed with old engines -- would have to meet more stringent emission standards for health-threatening and climate-changing pollution. Sales of these vehicles rose from approximately 1,000 in 2007 to 10,000 last year. EPA estimates that gliders are 20-40 times dirtier than a new truck with a modern emissions control system.
Margie Alt, Executive Director of Environment America, issued the following statement in response:
“This proposal would re-open a pollution loophole big enough to drive a truck through.
Old, dirty truck engines pollute our air and make us sick. Their emissions cause asthma attacks, hospital visits and can even kill.
Moreover, old trucks are inefficient and contribute excessively to global warming -- which is exacerbating dangerous weather, like the wildfires that have wracked California and the record hurricanes that have battered Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas and other coastal areas.
We urge the Trump Administration to keep this rule in place. We need to do more to clean up dirty vehicles and protect our families’ health and the planet, not less.”
