With Today's Deadline Looming, Oil Companies Are Still "Maybes" on Testifying

WASHINGTON -
Today is the deadline for oil giants BP, Exxon, Chevron, and Royal Dutch Shell to respond to the House Oversight Committee’s call to testify about the oil and gas industry’s ongoing efforts to misinform the public and impede progress on protecting the climate. Major Big Oil trade group the American Petroleum Institute (API) — which oil companies like Exxon have reportedly used as their “whipping boys” to take the blows for their worst anti-climate behaviors — has already announced that it will appear before the committee at the hearing next month.

"Big Oil loves to talk about how misunderstood their industry is — yet when major oil companies get the chance to testify before Congress and the American public about their fear mongering on climate action, they give lawmakers the silent treatment,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Big Oil has worked to misinform and mislead the public against President Biden’s widely popular climate solutions for too long, all to keep profits safely in executives’ pockets. The only question now is whether these companies will keep hiding behind API, or if they’ll show up to answer for their behavior head-on.”
