CREDO Blasts Sen. Collins' Proposal to Put Christine Blasey Ford on Trial

CREDO released the statement below in response to Sen. Susan Collins' proposal to allow Brett Kavanaugh's counsel to cross-examine Christine Blasey Ford:

"Sen. Collins seems to have forgotten that Brett Kavanaugh is the one who has been accused of a crime, not Christine Blasey Ford," said CREDO Action Co-Director Heidi Hess. "Senate Republicans must not attempt to put Christine Blasey Ford on trial or otherwise use Monday's hearing to attack her character," she said. "Christine Blasey Ford has offered an extremely credible account of sexual misconduct committed by Brett Kavanaugh," she continued. "The burden of proof rests exclusively with Brett Kavanaugh, who has shown repeatedly in recent weeks that he has no problem lying under oath to advance his career."

In just the past few hours more than 25,000 people have signed CREDO's petition urging members of the Senate to respect Christine Blasey Ford for her courage and refuse to undermine, discredit or defame her. The full petition, which was launched this morning, reads:

Survivors who make public their stories of sexual assault or harassment are taking huge risks to hold abusers accountable, especially when a Supreme Court seat is at stake. Respect Christine Blasey Ford for her courage and refuse to undermine, discredit or defame her.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of over five million activists, sending tens of millions of petition signatures and hundreds of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
