Greenpeace Response to Downplaying of Clinton Fossil Fuel Money at Brooklyn Debate

Statement from Greenpeace Democracy Campaign Director Molly Dorozenski

WASHINGTON

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders sparred over the role of fossil fuel money in the election during tonight's Brooklyn debate. Clinton downplayed the significance of the money from oil, gas and coal lobbyists. Greenpeace research has identified nearly $4.5 million donated to Clinton's campaign and the Super PAC supporting her from the fossil fuel industry. Nearly $1.5 million comes from 59 fossil fuel lobbyists and bundlers.

In response to tonight's fossil fuel money discussion, Greenpeace Democracy Campaign Director Molly Dorozenski said:

"There is no question that fossil fuel industry lobbyists and executives who donate huge sums of money receive access to candidates that the rest of us cannot afford. For every minute any candidate spends courting lobbyists with corporate agendas, they miss out on conversations with communities already dealing with the impacts of climate change. Secretary Clinton understands the negative influence of lobbyists since she has already rejected money from private prison lobbyists. The logical next step is to reject money from fossil fuel lobbyists, a significant move that could have an impact far beyond this election."
