President Obama’s Address at Climate Summit Promises More of the Same
WASHINGTON - Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch, issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s speech at the United Nations Climate Summit, and the White House's announcement of the UN Oil and Gas Methane Partnership:
“President Obama’s executive order today, that hinges on the voluntary initiative, the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership, is more evidence that his administration is not serious about reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. One does not solve the greatest environmental crisis in our lifetime with half measures and by running interference for the petroleum industry.
Until the administration commits the nation’s resources to creating an energy future, based on a real transition to renewable energy and energy efficiency, and until it stops looking to Wall Street and the energy industry to lead on climate, we will continue down the path to more climate chaos."
FRIENDS: Help Us Fight
Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
