TOLEDO, Ohio

This Wednesday morning, October 19th, at 10:00 am, a Press Conference will be held at Levi's Square directly north of the Toledo Edison building in downtown Toledo. The focus of the briefing will be on the Davis-Besse reactor building crack and citizens' response and initiatives to this unfolding debacle.

Attorney Terry Lodge will provide updates including new pending legal interventions to halt the re-licensing of the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant. Beyond Nuclear is a lead organization in the environmental coalition challenging FirstEnergy nuclear utility's bid for a 20 year license extension.

Intervenors will review the status of the Davis-Besse crack and the track record of FirstEnergy. Engineering, legal and financial perspectives will be provided.

Citizens will initiate and introduce a Resolution which speaks to the need for: independent inspection; protection of public health and safety; alternative energy. This Resolution will be sent to all Toledo City Council members by a broad coalition requesting support. This coalition includes the Toledo Safe Energy Coalition; Ohio Green Party; Beyond Nuclear; Citizens Environment Alliance; Coalition Against Nukes; Don't Waste Michigan.

"The splitting of the atom has changed everything except the way we think. Thus we drift toward unparalleled catastrophe. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive...To the village square...we must carry the facts of atomic energy, from there must come America's voice." ---Albert Einstein, June,1946

Beyond Nuclear aims to educate and activate the public about the connections between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and the need to abandon both to safeguard our future. Beyond Nuclear advocates for an energy future that is sustainable, benign and democratic.
