Japan Parliamentarians: Expand Evacuation Zone

WASHINGTON - In the first of a three-day sign-on, ten members of the Japanese Diet signed a petition seeking that the Japanese government:

1. “Evacuate pregnant mothers and pre-school age children from within the 30 km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

2. “Drastically increase the general public evacuation zone beyond the 20 km radius.”

Aileen Mioko Smith is executive director of Green Action, a Japanese environmental group. She happens to be visiting San Francisco. She has been stating from the beginning of the crisis that the Japanese government has not been sharing critical information with the public. A nationwide consortium, the Institute for Public Accuracy (IPA) represents an unprecedented effort to bring other voices to the mass-media table often dominated by a few major think tanks. IPA works to broaden public discourse in mainstream media, while building communication with alternative media outlets and grassroots activists.
