56,000 Reasons for a National Water Policy Delivered to PMO

OTTAWA

The Council of Canadians has delivered more than 56,000 petitions to Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office today calling for a National Water Policy that bans bulk water exports, protects Canada's fresh water resources, and recognizes access to water as a human right.

"The Council of Canadians is calling for a national water policy that recognizes water as a human right in domestic law, declares surface and groundwater a public trust, and supports the recognition of water as a human right in international law," says Council of Canadians Director of Organizing Carleen Pickard. "The federal government should create a national water infrastructure fund, stop compelling municipalities to explore P3s under the Building Canada Fund, and remove Schedule 2 from the Fisheries Act."

"Tens of thousands of Canadians are saying loudly and clearly that the Harper government must act now to protect water," says Council of Canadians Director of Campaigns and Communications Brent Patterson. "Water must be seen as a commons that belongs to the Earth and all species alike. It must be declared a public trust that belongs to the people, ecosystems and the future and preserved for all time and practice in law. Clean water must be delivered as a public service, not a profitable commodity."

This action was one of many happening across Canada in the interest of public water.

Founded in 1985, the Council of Canadians is Canada's leading social action organization, mobilizing a network of 60 chapters across the country.
