Green New Deal Must Include Fossil Fuel Phaseout

WASHINGTON - In response to news reports that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) will propose Green New Deal policy as early as next week, Greenpeace USA Climate Director Janet Redman said,

“Senator Ed Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal for a Green New Deal is inspiring, bold, and transformative – but it won’t get us to a future in which the most vulnerable are protected and global temperatures stop rising if it doesn’t include a hard stop on fossil fuel expansion. Leaders like these have helped change the political debate on climate change this year, and opened new avenues to ambitious climate leadership from our legislators.  But we have to continue radical encouragement of climate leaders in Congress to get us where we actually need to be if we’re serious about staving off the worst impacts of the climate crisis.”

“Now is this country’s chance to break free of climate half-measures and adopt policies that will actually save lives. The decades of congressional punting on climate change never changed the fact that the crisis is here, it is already impacting our lives, and it will only get worse."
