A Vote for Kavanaugh Is a Vote Against Choice, Civil Rights and Voting Rights

WASHINGTON

CREDO released the following statement in response to Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to serve as associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court:

"Any Senator - Democrat or Republican - who votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh is knowingly voting to overturn Roe v. Wade, undermine our civil rights and supercharge Republican efforts to suppress the vote." CREDO Action Co-Director Heidi Hess said. "Trump and the Republican machine trying to jam through this nomination will do everything they can to obfuscate Kavanaugh's beliefs and downplay the consequences of a Trump Court takeover. Some senators may attempt to hide behind that con job and pretend they don't understand what's at stake," Hess said. "Voters won't fall for such an obvious and cowardly dodge - and reporters shouldn't either."

"If Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Shelley Moore Capito actually support women's right to make their own choices about reproductive health care, they'll oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation," Hess continued. "If Sens. Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp, Doug Jones and Joe Donnelly truly share the broad set of values that have defined the Democratic Party for decades, they will proudly vote to reject Kavanaugh's confirmation," Hess said. "And if Sen. Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is an even remotely competent leader he will use every tool at his disposal to keep Senate Democrats fully unified in opposition," she added. "The American people will find out soon enough which senators want to be remembered for being accomplices in Donald Trump's anti-choice, pro-discrimination takeover of the Supreme Court."

CREDO's petition calling on the Senate to reject Kavanaugh's confirmation has been signed by more than 120,000 people. The petition can be found here: https://act.credoaction.com/sign/Save_SCOTUS/
