Greenpeace Responds to UK Government Plan to Phase Out Coal by 2025
WASHINGTON - In response to the government's publication of their plans to phase out coal by 2025, Hannah Martin, Head of Energy at Greenpeace UK, said:
"This is significant progress on making coal history in the birthplace of the industrial revolution. The government shares the credit with millions of UK citizens who have voiced their support for this move over the years. But it is important that this is carried through, and the government must provide enough Parliamentary time to do it properly. Coal should be replaced with clean technologies well before the 2025 deadline if we are to stay global leaders in tackling climate change."

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
