WASHINGTON

Governor Jay Inslee announced a budget proposal that includes a carbon tax that will be unveiled next month.

In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter released the following statement:

"Washington state voters rejected a carbon tax last year. It is disappointing that Governor Inslee is trying to revive this policy as part of a budget proposal. Carbon taxes have failed to reduce carbon emissions, and they do not put us on a meaningful path to rapidly transitioning to 100 percent clean energy, which should an urgent policy priority. The carbon tax experiment in British Columbia has been a failure, so it would be a serious mistake to import this flawed policy, in Washington or anywhere else."

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
