Voters Will Hold Anti-Abortion Politicians Accountable for the Loss of Their Constitutional Rights

Leaked Supreme Court Decision comes on same day presidents of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, EMILY’s List, and NARAL announced plans to spend a historic $150 million on the midterm elections.

WASHINGTON

Last night, Politico broke the news of a leaked draft of the majority Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that confirms the court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate the constitutional right to an abortion. This decision would likely lead 26 states to swiftly move to ban abortion, leaving 36 million women and more people who can become pregnant without access to safe, legal abortion.

This shocking news came just hours after a blockbuster Washington Post story revealed that if the court overturns Roe, anti-abortion groups and lawmakers will work to pass a nationwide abortion ban.

Statement from Jenny Lawson, executive director, Planned Parenthood Votes:

"Voters are waking up this morning to the news that their constitutional right to an abortion, which they have relied on for nearly 50 years, may soon be a thing of the past. And they are going to know exactly who to blame: the anti-abortion politicians, many of whom are on the ballot this November, who waged a decades-long, coordinated campaign to outlaw abortion in every state they could. If they are not stopped, their next goal is to push a nationwide abortion ban, putting politicians in control of the reproductive decisions of every person in this country. They are on the wrong side of history, and acting against the wishes of voters. The court may be turning its back on nearly 50 years of precedent, but voters have the final say. Politicians will hear them loud and clear at the ballot box this November.

"The stakes for abortion rights and ALL our freedoms have never been more clear, which is why Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations across the country are investing a historic amount in our largest ever electoral program. We have to elect abortion rights champions up and down the ballot, all across across the country. Our rights, our health, and our reproductive freedom depend on it."

Yesterday, the presidents of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, EMILY's List, and NARAL-Pro Choice America announced plans to spend a historic $150 million on the midterm elections. Investments by these nationwide advocacy and political organizations, including Planned Parenthood Votes, will be made on races up and down the ballot from state legislatures, to attorney generals and governors, to U.S. House and Senate races.

There is no state where banning abortion is popular. Voters oppose overturning Roe by a 30 point margin.

Planned Parenthood was founded over 100 years ago on the revolutionary idea that women have the right to access the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives. Today, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) fights to protect that right--often in the face of extreme politicians trying to take it away.
