Statement About January 6: Our Prized and Priceless Democracy

The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) released the following statement on the first anniversary on the January 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol.

Last year's assault on our nation's Capitol was a violent and horrifying representation of the ongoing and serious attacks on our democracy. Without a healthy and functioning democracy, business as we know it cannot survive, because democracy and U.S. businesses are existentially linked.

WASHINGTON

The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) released the following statement on the first anniversary on the January 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol.

Last year's assault on our nation's Capitol was a violent and horrifying representation of the ongoing and serious attacks on our democracy. Without a healthy and functioning democracy, business as we know it cannot survive, because democracy and U.S. businesses are existentially linked.

No acts of terrorism, domestic or foreign, can be tolerated in a functioning democracy, and the events of January 6, 2021 were both a physical and symbolic desecration of the citadel of our republic, a citadel long recognized around the world as the representation of the rule of law and government of the people. The strength of our democracy is prized and priceless based on its contributions to the success of American businesses and our people.

We reflect on this somber anniversary as a time to recommit ourselves to our values and our principles to restore our economy in a way that works for all, to overcome this pandemic, and rebuild a better and more equitable and just society. US business organizations and companies from all sectors must stand together to reclaim our democracy.

The American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) advocates for policy change and informs business owners, policymakers and the public about the need and opportunities for building a vibrant, broadly prosperous, sustainable economy. Founded in 2009, its membership represents over 250,000 businesses in a wide range of industries.
