Over 120,000 Public Comments on Keystone XL Pipeline Submitted to U.S. State Department

The U.S. State Department's comment period on their revised environmental impact statement Keystone XL pipeline has ended. Across organizations, over 120,000 people submitted comments, and at 350.org, 19,523 people wrote in to highlight the climate impacts Keystone will produce, and the devastating impacts it's spills have already created. Keystone 1, part of the Keystone pipeline system, recently caused a catastrophic oil spill in North Dakota.

The following is a statement from Kendall Mackey, 350.org U.S. Campaigner for Keep It In The Ground:

"There is no reason to assume that Keystone XL is a done deal -- we have defeated it before, and will defeat it again. With a huge amount of public comments pouring into the State Departments comment period, steadfast climate activists, Indigenous communities, landowners, and farmers along the route have shown that 11 years of resistance have only strengthened the movement against the Keystone XL pipeline. We are now long overdue for an end to Keystone XL, once and for all.

"Through devastating spills, gross mismanagement, and an outright denial from the Administration about the pipeline's climate threat, the movement against extracting fossil fuels has remained adamant: we must keep fossil fuels in the ground. Only by stopping pipelines like Keystone XL, and until we stop all fossil fuel infrastructure, will we actually achieve the kind of just transition we need."
