Tax Day 2022 Marks Six-Plus Years Since Trump Promised to Release Tax Returns—He Still Hasn’t

Advocates Renew Push for Congress to Pass Legislation to Fight Corruption, Make Presidency More Transparent
WASHINGTON -

Tax Day 2022 marks six-plus years since former president Donald Trump promised to release his tax returns—he still hasn’t. While judicial enforcers attempt to compel Trump to release his tax documents, democracy and ethics reform advocates are renewing their calls for Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act.

Stand Up America’s Managing Director of Policy & Political Affairs Brett Edkins commented:

“Donald Trump’s presidency was defined by corruption, chaos and broken promises—including his promise to release his tax returns. Unsurprisingly, he has resisted every attempt to compel the release of his returns and rejected long-standing precedent upheld by previous presidents and candidates.

“No president, regardless of party, should be able to obstruct and undermine congressional and judicial investigations or exploit weaknesses in our political system to hide their personal financial entanglements. It’s time for Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act, critical legislation that would require the president and vice president, and candidates for those offices, to publicly disclose ten years of tax returns.

“The American people deserve the unflinching truth about how our nation’s chief executive conducts their finances, and Congress must do its part by passing the Protecting Our Democracy Act.”
