Demand Progress Applauds Commerce Committee Votes on Sohn and Bedoya, Calls for Quick Senate Floor Vote

WASHINGTON

Following Senate Commerce Committee votes on Federal Communications Commission nominee Gigi Sohn and Federal Trade Commission nominee Alvaro Bedoya, Demand Progress issued the following statement:

"For more than a year, the public has been without a fully functional FCC, while the FTC has been deadlocked without a fifth commissioner for months. These agencies are crucial to providing oversight and curtailing the rampant consumer abuses carried out by the telecom industry and monopolistic tech companies. This is exactly why many industry-backed members of Congress have fought tooth and nail to keep them deadlocked.

"Today's committee votes are important milestones on the path to finally having commissions that are fully empowered to serve the public. Although we would have preferred these nominees advanced months earlier, we commend the work of senators who supported Sohn and Bedoya today, particularly Sen. Lujan who returned for this vote and Chairwoman Cantwell for pushing forward in the face of cynical and increasingly desperate opposition tactics, such as a committee boycott threat fueled by industry hostility.

"Gigi Sohn is one of the most qualified nominees to the FCC in recent history, with an undeniable record as a policy expert and, critically, a public interest champion who will put the interests of the American people first by working to ensure commonsense open internet protections and affordable broadband.

"Alvaro Bedoya has demonstrated he understands the dangers of Big Tech monopolies. He has shown a particular awareness of how these companies impact communities of color and small businesses. When it comes to holding Big Tech monopolies accountable, time is of the essence and he has a critical role to play at the FTC.

"It is now incumbent on Majority Leader Schumer to hold a floor vote for these nominees as soon as possible. We call on him to move swiftly, and for all senators to support these nominees in order to finally achieve a full FCC and FTC."
