Public Citizen Applauds Biden's Non-Defense Budget Proposal

Budget Includes $769 Billion for Non-Defense Federal Departments

WASHINGTON

Today, President Joe Biden released his first outlined budget request for fiscal year 2022 that includes $769 billion for non-defense federal departments, marking a 16% increase from the final year of President Donald Trump. Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president at Public Citizen, issued the following statement:

"If budgets are a show of priorities, President Biden has signaled his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of everyday Americans. From a boost to the Department of Justice to help improve voting rights, to a big bump to the CDC in this time of national health crisis, to extensive money to agencies for fighting climate change, this budget blueprint takes important steps to boost domestic spending in the manner we need in order to build back better.

"While we applaud the budget items that improve lives and extend long-overdue pandemic relief on the non-defense side, continuing to pour billions into the Pentagon budget is both wasteful and unnecessary. As Congress moves forward with this guidance for appropriating, they still have time to adjust the budget and meet true human needs rather than blindly fulfill demands from the military-industrial complex and its lobbyists.

"The domestic priorities exemplified in President Biden's budget are exceedingly popular, and Congress should swiftly move to create spending bills with this backdrop in order to fund the agencies who carry out the work at higher levels in order to build a more equitable economy and reorient the government to work for all people - not just wealthy special interests."
