The Senate Must Reject the GOP Anti-Immigrant Amendments

Today, the Senate is debating legislation that could protect 1.8 million immigrant young people left vulnerable to deportation by President Trump's cruel decision to end DACA. Republicans have proposed amendments that would use the crisis created by Trump to advance an anti-immigrant, white nationalist agenda that would severely restrict legal immigration, build a wall, and privelege white European immigrants.

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

Today, the Senate is debating legislation that could protect 1.8 million immigrant young people left vulnerable to deportation by President Trump's cruel decision to end DACA. Republicans have proposed amendments that would use the crisis created by Trump to advance an anti-immigrant, white nationalist agenda that would severely restrict legal immigration, build a wall, and privelege white European immigrants.

Voces de la Frontera issued the following statement on the debate so far:

"Trump and the white nationalist anti-immigrant movement are not interested in negotiating in a bipartisan way to come to a solution to protect immigrant youth," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. "Their only aim is to use this crisis to return our immigration system to the Jim Crow era. None of these amendments represent a sincere effort to help immigrant youth. We need a vote on a clean Dream Act. If Trump and Paul Ryan really want a legislative solution to protect DACA recipients, they will call for a vote on a clean Dream Act bill. Leader Schumer and Democratic Senators like Tammy Baldwin must hold the line for the clean Dream Act and vote against any amendment that would build a racist wall, ban families from immigrating, or separate more immigrant families. The McCain-Coons, Grassley, Toomey, and Rounds-King amendments must be rejected."

"Safety for immigrant young people like me must not come at the expense of millions of immigrant families," said Alejandra Gonzalez, a college student and DACA recipient from Milwaukee. "A vote for these bills is a vote to separate families. Senator Baldwin and Senator Schumer must stand up for our values and not settle for a white nationalist bill that would separate millions of families."
