As Trump Looks to Dismantle the EPA, Concerned Americans Rally to Demand Lawmakers Defend Public Health and the Environment

Trump is Proposing a 31 Percent Budget Cut at EPA; Actions Target Senators Across Country

WASHINGTON

As details of the Trump administration's plans to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency and attack fundamental health and safety standards steadily come to light, thousands of concerned residents and community leaders rallied at dozens of actions across the country today to demand that lawmakers resist Trump's agenda and defend the funding and mission of the EPA. The National Day of Action to Defend Public Health and the Environment was organized by the advocacy groups Food & Water Watch and People's Action.

Additionally, residents and activists delivered to all 50 senators today a letter signed by more than 400 local, state and national advocacy groups demanding that they resist legislation undermining environmental laws; oppose any executive orders targeting Obama-era actions; fight proposed budget cuts to EPA; and support deep investments in energy and water infrastructure.

The administration announced on Thursday its intention to slash the EPA's budget by 31 percent, and do away entirely with the agency's programs on climate change and numerous large-scale pollution cleanup initiatives throughout the country. The responsibility now rests with Congress to reject Trump's draconian plan and firmly defend EPA's budget and function.

"Trump's election initiated the fight of a lifetime to protect public health and our environment from corporate profit-driven catastrophe. Now more than ever, it is imperative that lawmakers do all in their power to hamper, stall, resist and thwart this administration's pro-polluter agenda," said Wenonah Hauter, executive director at Food & Water Watch. "Thousands of people issued that demand on the streets of America today, and they will be holding their elected leaders accountable moving forward."

"If these cuts are enacted, the EPA will be hamstrung in reining in the greed of big oil, gas and coal at the expense of our health and economy," said George Goehl, co-director of People's Action. "All over the country, unprecedented numbers of us are raising our voices in defense of health care, the vitality of our communities and our immigrant neighbors. We expect millions to come out and fight to protect people and the planet from the crony capitalism of Donald Trump and the Republican Party."

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
