Marco Rubio Sells out Hispanic Community; Throws Support Behind Smith/Grassley Mass Deportation Plan

Yesterday, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) each introduced their own versions of mandatory E-Verify legislation. WASHINGTON

Yesterday, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) each introduced their own versions of mandatory E-Verify legislation. Freshman senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) is an original cosponsor of the Grassley bill. Following is a statement from Lynn Tramonte, Deputy Director of America's Voice:

"Marco Rubio has become a go-along Washington insider overnight. By championing mandatory E-Verify, the big government program with a 50% fail rate, Rubio has thrown Hispanics under the bus in order to cozy up to anti-immigrant 'leaders' in Congress like Sen. Grassley and Rep. Lamar Smith.

"The Republican proposal to 'fix' our broken immigration system is a mass deportation fantasy. The goal of the Smith and Grassley bills is to drive 11 million undocumented immigrants and their families--most of whom are Latino--out of the country. Of course, their bill will never accomplish that goal, and will instead drive more jobs and workers into the underground economy. But the fact that Marco Rubio put his name on this bill shows that he just doesn't get it. He is incapable of being a real bridge to the Latino community for the GOP.

"As the Republican Party hardened its stance on immigration over the years, it handed Democrats the Latino vote. In fact, the reason the Senate remains in Democratic hands today is because of anti-immigrant campaigning by Republican Senate candidates in the west. A new poll from Latino Decisions and impreMedia shows that immigration continues to be the top issue for this fast-growing segment of the electorate, beating jobs and the economy by 16 points. By a 65% to 19% margin, more voters trust Democrats than Republicans on the issue. And, more than half of Latino voters know someone who is undocumented. They see, up close and personal, how the broken immigration system affects their family members, neighbors, coworkers, and friends every day.

"As we've said many times before, the Republican Party really does have to change its extreme, monolithic position on the issue of immigration reform if it wants to compete for Latino voters and remain a viable national party. 'Get out' sounds the same whether it's coming out of Lamar Smith, Chuck Grassley, or Marco Rubio's mouth."
