350.Org Reacts to President Biden's "Climate Baby Steps" Announcement in Massachusetts

Today, with heatwaves raging across the middle of the USA, and 60 million Americans anticipating to see triple-digit heat over the next week, President Biden decided not to declare a Climate Emergency. While we welcome Biden calling climate change a "clear and present danger", and "an existential threat", the new measures he mentioned don't do enough to meet commitments already made as a part of the Paris Climate Agreement.

WASHINGTON

Today, with heatwaves raging across the middle of the USA, and 60 million Americans anticipating to see triple-digit heat over the next week, President Biden decided not to declare a Climate Emergency. While we welcome Biden calling climate change a "clear and present danger", and "an existential threat", the new measures he mentioned don't do enough to meet commitments already made as a part of the Paris Climate Agreement.

350.org, a global organization working for climate justice, demands that President Biden immediately use all the tools at his disposal to support phasing in of clean energy technologies, and phasing out of the outdated fossil fuels that cause climate chaos, massive human suffering, and lead to a loss of billions of dollars to the US economy, and drive up food prices and inflation.

JL Andrepont, MPA, PhDc. Senior Policy Campaigner and Policy Analyst at 350.org, stated,
"We appreciate that Biden feels like the climate crisis is an emergency, but now is the time for him to act like it. The planet is burning; droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires are contributing to famine and death on almost every continent, while Biden waits to officially declare a Climate Emergency, and waits to use all of the powers at his disposal to comprehensively address the climate crisis."

"What is needed right now is not more words, but action. He needs to shut down the fossil fuel industry, not support false solutions like tech-based carbon capture, which is just another giveaway to the fossil fuel industry. Every day the President waits to stop all new fossil fuel extraction projects in the US is another day lost, and will cause temperatures to rise even higher, costing even more lives."

"We are in a crisis of tipping points, and frontline and BIPOC communities are losing their lives and livelihoods while Biden dithers. The planet and every living creature on it doesn't have a moment to waste. The time for action is now. He needs to start keeping to his commitments to fight the climate crisis, and to fight for real climate justice."

350 is building a future that's just, prosperous, equitable and safe from the effects of the climate crisis. We're an international movement of ordinary people working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all.
