Sunrise Endorses Greg Casar for TX-35

WASHINGTON -

This morning, Sunrise Movement endorsed Green New Deal champion Austin City Councilman Greg Casar, and his campaign to bring the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and more, to TX-35. Casar is Sunrise Movement’s first open seat endorsement of the 2022 campaign cycle.

“While corrupt, wealthy politicians fled the deadly Texas Freeze last year and continued to profit off of the destruction of Texas’ communities, Greg Casar was on the ground, organizing and delivering life saving aid for his constituents,” said Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement. “Greg Casar proves that fighting the climate crisis in Texas is possible and popular. Greg is an unapologetic organizer, and young people are mobilizing in droves to elect a proven climate champion. The momentum we see building among voters energized by climate disasters, mobilizing to elect a Green New Deal champion from their community is what Sunrise has worked for since its founding. Texas is ready for a Green New Deal, and we’re excited to do all we can to elect Greg.”

Support for Casar continues to grow, with Sunrise Movement mobilizing their San Antonio and Austin hubs, and nationally, to turn out young and marginalized communities to vote for Casar through phonebanks, digital campaigns, on the ground support, and more. Casar has also earned the endorsement of Justice Democrats, Working Families Party, Squad members like Rep. Jamaal Bowman, unions such as Austin Labor Council and Ironworkers 482, Texas politicians, faith leaders, and more.

“During the Texas Winter Storm, we saw first hand how working class neighborhoods were left to fend for themselves for days or weeks while the state’s top officials blamed renewable energy or flew to the beach,” said Greg Casar, candidate for TX-35. “Texans deserve leadership who will fight and deliver for them. I’m proud to have earned the endorsement of Sunrise Movement, because together we can fix the power grid, fight for a future for our children, and create a sustainable planet for us all.”

This endorsement by Sunrise Movement is part of its 2022 electoral strategy, where the organization is mobilizing young and progressive people to back candidates that support the Green New Deal, and reject candidates who cater to fossil fuel corporations exacerbating the climate crisis. Sunrise has also endorsed Jessica Cisneros for TX-28, and continues to organize both on the ground and virtually.
