NARAL Pro-Choice America Releases New Video Holding Senator Susan Collins Accountable for Her Vote to Confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh

Following Kavanaugh’s Opinion to Overturn Precedent to Restrict Abortion, New Video Showcases Compilation of All the Times Collins Tried to Justify Her Deciding Vote, Saying Kavanaugh Would Respect Precedent.

Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America released a new video calling out Senator Susan Collins for continually insisting that Brett Kavanaugh would respect Supreme Court precedent as justification for casting the deciding vote to confirm Kavanaugh to the Court and putting reproductive freedom at risk.

Throughout Kavanaugh’s nomination process and into his time on the bench, Sen. Collins falsely claimed that Kavanaugh did not pose a threat to Roe v. Wade because he would “uphold precedent.” Sen. Collins’ contortions and misrepresentations about Kavanaugh’s alleged respect for precedent were exposed yet again in the recent June Medical Services LLC v. Russo case where he blatantly ignored the precedent set by Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt in 2016 by voting to uphold a restrictive law in Louisiana designed to shut down abortion clinics and roll back reproductive freedom.

“Susan Collins likes to pretend she cares about protecting reproductive freedom, but she made her true colors known when she cast the deciding vote to put extreme ideologue Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, ” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Women in Maine and across the country see right through her deception and recognize her attacks on our fundamental freedoms. This video showcases Susan Collins’ flimsy justifications for her part in putting Kavanaugh on the bench, where he’s made clear his willingness to overturn precedent to accomplish his nefarious agenda. Her protestations of ‘precedent’ echo her repeated claims that she’s ‘disappointed’ in Donald Trump, while she rubber-stamps his judicial nominees and refuses to actually stand up to him. Come November, NARAL members will make sure Susan Collins answers for her actions.”

While masquerading as a supporter of reproductive freedom and ally to women, Sen. Susan Collins voted to confirm Trump’s two Supreme Court nominees, Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, despite Mainers’ overwhelming opposition to Justice Kavanaugh’s nomination in 2018.

NARAL has endorsed Sara Gideon in her bid to unseat Susan Collins and represent Maine in the U.S. Senate. Gideon has served as speaker in the Maine State House since 2016 and is a proven leader in the fight for reproductive freedom and a tireless advocate for women and families in Maine.
