Chaos in the White House - Torturers Nominated for Top Positions

LONDON

Donald Trump's firing of his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, via a tweet, and his nomination of CIA's director Mike Pompeo to be the next Secretary of State, complete Trump's replacement of his front-line staff with an essentially new administration.

As Trump indicated, Rex Tillerson opposed the planned scrapping of the Iran nuclear programme deal. CIA director Mike Pompeo, on the other hand, has long held a belligerent stance towards Iran and has been centrally involved in CIAs extrajudicial killing and torture programme.
Trump has also nominated Gina Haspel, who has had an extensive role in torturing detainees under Bush's regime and in running a CIA "black site" in Thailand, to be the new director of the CIA.

Trump's latest moves are a further confirmation that Britain needs to urgently disassociate itself from the unhinged and belligerent agenda of the US administration.

We reiterate our call to cancel the Trump visit. Stop the War national officer John Rees said: "Neither Trump nor his torturers are welcome here."

Stop the War was founded in September 2001 in the weeks following 9/11, when George W. Bush announced the "war on terror". Stop the War has since been dedicated to preventing and ending the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere. Stop the War opposes the British establishment's disastrous addiction to war and its squandering of public resources on militarism. We have initiated many campaigns around these issues.
