Democratic Leadership Should Treat Dream, CHIP as Non-negotiables in Spending Bill; No Dream, No CHIP, No Deal

Democrats must use their leverage to fight for Dreamers and kids in need of health care.

WASHINGTON

CREDO released the following statement to urge Democratic leadership to insist on both a clean Dream Act and the reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in any spending bill that goes beyond the end of the year:

"While it is true that Trump and congressional Republicans created this mess by ending DACA and failing to reauthorize CHIP, Democratic congressional leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have the leverage to ensure that any spending bill that goes past the end of the year protects Dreamers and children without health insurance," CREDO Political Director Murshed Zaheed said.

He continued, "Democrats need to treat Dream and CHIP as absolute non-negotiables in this spending bill. There is quite simply no room for compromise; the future of 800,000 Dreamers and the healthcare of millions of low-income children are at stake," Zaheed said. "Already, 10,000 Dreamers have lost their status as a direct result of Trump and DHS' mishandling of renewal applications and children will soon start going without desperately needed health care."

Zaheed added, "Democrats must recognize that there is no wiggle room when it comes to a child's future and health, and they should act accordingly: No CHIP, no Dream, no deal."

Hundreds of thousands of CREDO activists have signed petitions urging Democrats to use their leverage to ensure that the year-end spending bill includes a clean Dream Act and reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program. Thousands more have made phone calls to key Senate offices with the same demand.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of over five million activists, sending tens of millions of petition signatures and hundreds of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
