    Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu

Maldives Bans All Israeli Travelers Over 'Genocidal Acts' in Gaza

Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Indian Ocean archipelago nation last year.

    Jun 03, 2024

Citing the Gaza genocide, the Maldives said Sunday that it will ban all Israeli passport holders from entering the Indian Ocean archipelago nation, in which income from tourism accounts for nearly 30% of the gross domestic product.

Acting on a recommendation by his Cabinet, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu will impose the travel ban, the details of which will be determined by a specially appointed subcommittee. Muizzu's office also said the president will appoint a special envoy "to assess Palestinian needs."

'Alarming Trend': Despite Growing Climate Threat, Venice Avoids UNESCO Endangered Listing

"If nations continue to ignore the existential threat climate change poses to places like Venice, they could be irrevocably damaged or lost forever," said one climate expert.

    Brett Wilkins
    Sep 14, 2023

Climate campaigners expressed dismay Thursday after a United Nations panel declined to place Venice on its list of endangered World Heritage sites—even though the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization acknowledges thatsea-level rise and extreme weather driven by the planetary emergency are increasingly threatening the famed Italian city.

Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the 21 nations on UNESCO's World Heritage Committee for the second time since 2021 did not include Venice—a city of 260,000 residents, 118 islands, 150 canals, and around 10 million annual visitors—on its endangered list. This, despite UNESCO recommending the listing and previously noting that the city "has become vulnerable as a result of irreversible natural and climate changes."

People walk down a flooded street after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana

Hurricane Katrina and Bernie Sanders: From Neoliberal Disaster to 'Political Revolution'

There is only one presidential candidate who has consistently fought for the kinds of policies that New Orleans so desperately required prior to and during Katrina, and that it needs now more than ever.

    Adolph Reed Jr.
    Michael Francis
    Steve Striffler
    Aug 29, 2015

The 10th anniversary of the devastation of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has been an occasion for reflection on that horrific event and the state of the city's recovery. Much of that commemoration, especially locally, has centered on the theme of resilience. This is understandable; in many ways, the city has recovered, and many people have sacrificed much to make that recovery happen. In a city so dependent economically on tourism, it is important to stress that New Orleans remains a desirable destination. It also makes sense that local officials, and New Orleanians generally, would want to celebrate and pat themselves on the back a bit about how far the city has come since the terrible days, months, and, for many people, years after August 29, 2005.

But the celebration can gloss important facts about the nature of the disaster and the limited nature of the recovery, and these are facts that, despite having come together in an especially powerful, tragic, and criminal way in New Orleans, are rooted in much more general conditions in American political and economic life. Like cities across the country, New Orleans has been controlled by powerful interests and ideologies that have slashed public services and investment while ensuring that local, state, and federal governments serve profits over people. The consequences of these so-called reforms have been devastating. Cities have become home to unprecedented inequality. The affluent acquire ever-greater wealth through tax breaks, subsidies, and political access while enjoying high-end restaurants, a lively entertainment scene, and upscaling neighborhoods--what in New Orleans is often referred to as "the recovery."
