Center for Reproductive Rights Files Response to Mississippi's Request that Supreme Court Overturn Roe v. Wade

WASHINGTON

Today, the Center for Reproductive Rights filed its response brief in the Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. The case challenges a Mississippi ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy--a direct violation of Roe v. Wade. The brief submitted today is in response to Mississippi's opening brief, in which the state asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and permit states to ban abortion.

You can read the Center's full brief here.

Statement from Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:
"Politicians are attacking the right to abortion from all angles, and it must be stopped. We are asking the Supreme Court to defend the precedent it has stood by for nearly 50 years. This is a decisive moment for the Court and this country.

Right now, Texas has managed to ban abortion even as Roe stands, and other states have said they will follow in its footsteps. While Texas is circumventing Roe and the Constitution, Mississippi is openly asking the Court to overturn Roe. If the Court grants Mississippi's request to overturn Roe, large swaths of the South and Midwest--where abortion is already hard to access--will eliminate abortion completely.

More than two generations of Americans have lived their lives relying on access to legal abortion. The ability to make this decision is central to gender equality, and racial and economic justice. The stakes could not be higher."

The Center for Reproductive Rights is a global human rights organization of lawyers and advocates who ensure reproductive rights are protected in law as fundamental human rights for the dignity, equality, health, and well-being of every person.
