Anti-Hunger Advocates Praise Biden's Permanent Boost to Nutrition Benefits

Increase to snap is a “huge victory for the fight against hunger & the tens of millions of Americans facing food insecurity.”

WASHINGTON

The Biden Administration announced today a revision to the Thrifty Food Plan, which sets the amount of SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) recipients are able to receive each month. The revised plan will provide an additional $34 per week for a four-person household, a 21-percent boost from the former plan. There are currently 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP to meet their nutritional needs each month, and all program recipients will see an increase to their benefits starting in October.

In response to the Biden Administration's announcement, Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, a nationwide nonpartisan direct service and advocacy organization, said:

"The new Thrifty Food Plan is a huge victory in the fight against hunger and for the tens of millions of Americans facing food insecurity. This is something that Hunger Free America has been advocating for years, as a permanent boost to SNAP benefits will allow families participating in the program to be able to afford healthier food without fear of running out of benefits each month. This increase will be a huge relief for the 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP including working families who are simply not paid enough to afford basic living expenses. Being able to afford a more nutritious diet is also crucial for the overall health of low-income families, allowing them to have greater protection against COVID-19 as the rates of the virus continue to skyrocket in areas across the country. We thank the Biden Administration for following through on its promises to help low-income Americans and look forward to continuing to work with USDA on SNAP outreach so that all families who qualify for the program receive benefits."

Hunger Free America is a nonpartisan, national nonprofit group working to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food.
