Voces de la Frontera Responds to ICE Detention of 680 People in Mississippi
On Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that they had detained 680 immigrant workers in a series of raids at food processing plants across Mississippi. Voces de la Frontera issued the following statement:
“In less than a week we’ve seen mass shootings rooted in white nationalism, and a mass raid of hundreds of immigrant workers and parents,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. "These events have been directly and indirectly provoked by the Trump administration. They are intended to intimidate, degrade and insight further violence and separation of families. Our answer must be to continue to grow and escalate our resistance to raids and a toxic culture of xenophobia and racism. We encourage people to get involved in efforts, to publicly condemn these actions, use civil disobedience and direct action to prevent ICE raids, and demand that our U.S. Congressional Representatives defund ICE and CBP.”
In response to the raids, Voces de la Frontera invites people join us tonight at 5:30 pm at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison for a rally in support of state legislation that would make Wisconsin a sanctuary state, preventing Trump from coercing local government and local law enforcement into becoming an arm of ICE. A second bill would block for-profit private detention centers from being built in Wisconsin. The bills aim to affirm the value and contributions that immigrants make to Wisconsin's communities and economy and keep Wisconsin families together.
Further, in Wisconsin we invite people to participate in our statewide community driver license forums that will promote safer roads, build trust with local law enforcement, strengthen our local economy, and keep Wisconsin families together.
Voces de la Frontera is Wisconsin's leading immigrant rights group - a grassroots organization that believes power comes from below and that people can overcome injustice to build a better world.
