Patriotic Millionaires Cheer On Texas Democrats as They Flee State to Block GOP Voting Restrictions

"Democrats in the US Senate could learn a lot from these Texas Democrats - sometimes you have to pull out all the stops to protect democracy."

WASHINGTON

This evening, as the Texas legislature prepares to vote on a bill that would significantly restrict voting rights in the state, a group of Democratic lawmakers are planning to flee the state to Washington, DC to block the bill by preventing the State House from having the quorum required to conduct state business.

In response to this plan, Morris Pearl, former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., and Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires, released the following statement:

"This evening, Texas Democrats are setting a bold example for lawmakers in the dozens of other states where voting rights are under attack and in the US Capitol, where legislation to protect voting rights has yet again stalled. In Austin and all across the country, our democracy is being systematically and strategically undermined, and it's time for lawmakers to treat this assault on our democracy as the emergency it is. Democrats in the US Senate could learn a lot from these Texas Democrats - sometimes you have to pull out all the stops to protect democracy."

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high-net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing level of inequality in America. Our work centers on the two things that matter most in a capitalist democracy: power and money. Our goal is to ensure that the country's political economy is structured to meet the needs of regular Americans, rather than just millionaires. We focus on three "first" principles: a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens.
