EQCA’s LGBT Prisoner Safety Act Passes Committee by Unanimous Vote
The LGBT Prisoner Safety Act, AB 382, came one step closer to becoming law today, passing the Assembly Public Safety Committee with a unanimous 7-0 vote, winning the endorsement of the entire committee including five Democrats and two Republicans. Sponsored by Equality California (EQCA) and introduced last month by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D - San Francisco), the bill is designed to prevent violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the state prison system.

Equality California Expands Marriage Fight
Equality California is bringing two leaders on board to expand EQCA's efforts to achieve full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, including the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. Marc Solomon will lead EQCA's efforts to restore and keep the right to marry and increase public support and acceptance of LGBT families as its marriage director. State Legislature Goes On Record to Oppose Prop. 8
Both the California Senate and Assembly passed resolutions today opposing Proposition 8 as an illegal and unprecedented revision to the state Constitution. According to the resolutions, Prop. 8 illegally usurps the legislature’s role to vote on all fundamental revisions to the Constitution. By taking away the fundamental freedom to marry from one particular group, Prop. 8 alters the very intent of the Constitution, which is to treat all people equally under the law.

Assemblymember John A. Pérez Introduces Legislation to Expand Domestic Violence Services
In hopes of expanding domestic violence services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community members, Assembly Member John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles), today introduced AB 1003. Sponsored by Equality California, the bill would expand access for LGBT service providers to a state fund within the California Emergency Management Agency (CALEMA), which supports LGBT-specific domestic violence programs across the state and is subsidized by a $23 fee on new domestic partner registrations.
