Crunch Time for Planet Earth
It's crunch time for Planet Earth. The climate change negotiations in the run-up to the Copenhagen summit seem to be deadlocked. "America indicated yesterday that a legally binding agreement was probably impossible, and acceptance is growing among both rich and poor countries that no binding deal will be reached in Copenhagen next month, and that talks could drag well into 2010 or beyond," The Guardian reports.

Stop Wasting on the Military
The global arms madness continues. A new report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (one of my favorite think tanks) confirms that worldwide military expenditure is again on the up and up, with spending having increased by 4 percent in 2008. “All regions and subregions have seen significant increases since 1999, except for Western and Central Europe,” says the report ( available at www.sipri.org ).

International Criminal Court Faces Big Test With Israel
It should look into the allegations, not the least to refute the assertion that the court is an instrument of the West. The International Criminal Court soon faces a big test-a test that could reveal whether it is truly an independent institution. The Palestinian Authority has asked the court's chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, to examine if Israel was guilty of war crimes during its recent Gaza operation. Moreno-Ocampo should take a look into the allegations, not the least to refute the assertion that the court is an instrument of the West.

Obama Not Bold Enough on Foreign Policy
