2013 Resembles 1927, A Terrifying Year
I don’t know why you all seem to think it’s 2013. Clearly it is 1927. I just read Bill Bryson’s book on the American summer of that year — the glorious writer has an astonishing knack for narrative even on sedative subjects like baseball — and it fell from my nerveless fingers when I realized what he was trying to convey. The world is holding 1927 all over again.

Fiscal Cliff or Austerity Bomb, Time for Obama to Show Courage
The “fiscal cliff” allegedly approaches, as if the U.S.A. spends its days and nights in a Road Runner cartoon. Tax cuts expire but automatic spending cuts kick in, and that just might resend America into recession.

Mitt Romney’s Anti-Gay Bullying Has a Human Face Now
I love guilt. I wish people felt more of this emotion so foreign to Mitt Romney that he claims not to remember what a brute he was in school, the boy being father to the man, a Bain consultant who killed so many jobs in the ’80s that many grown men must have come home weeping to their families and never worked again.
