Like every authoritarian before him, Trump is working to co-opt news sources and control what the public sees and hears. Too many corporate outlets are bending the knee—but not Common Dreams. Watchdog Argues Obama Admin's Cave on White Supremacy Helped Pave Way for Jacksonville Shooting

"We must not be fooled into treating each massacre as its own tragedy," said one civil rights advocate. "The tragedy first lies in the unchecked proliferation of the violent racist ideology coupled with the unchecked access to weapons of war."

    Julia Conley
    Aug 30, 2023

As the community of Jacksonville, Florida reeled from the killing of three Black Americans by a white supremacist at a Dollar General store last Saturday, a government watchdog said that the "lion's share" of blame for the proliferation of racist, white nationalist violence in the U.S. can be placed on Republican politicians including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump—but noted that the Obama administration helped allow white supremacy to fester by caving to the GOP at a crucial moment more than a decade ago.

Chris Lewis, a senior researcher at the Revolving Door Project, pointed to the Democratic administration's response when Republican lawmakers complained about a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report in 2009 that warned of the growth of right-wing extremism, including the white supremacist movement, and the danger it posed to communities across the United States.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama, right, talks with then-House Speaker John Boehner in the White House.

A Quashed Obama-Era Report on Right-Wing Extremism Could Have Saved Lives

The Obama administration bowed its head to the Republican mob and neutered its own ability to combat domestic terrorism, helping to bring the country to where it is today.

    Chris Lewis
    Aug 30, 2023

A few days ago, a white supremacist murdered three innocent Black people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville. Like the shooter in Buffalo and Dylann Roof in Charleston, he had a manifesto that espoused white nationalist talking points and conspiracy theories. The prevalence of racist attacks in recent years underscores the alarming rise of right-wing domestic terrorism in the United States. The problem I want to address is: Who at the highest levels of government is to blame for this?

In this instance, you can place much of the blame at the feet of Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has made it his mission to erase the country’s history of anti-Black violence in his state’s education system. The Biden administration could surely utilize the bully pulpit more to attack domestic terror (after all, their FBI director, Chris Wray, has stressed that one of the greatest threats to U.S. democracy is right-wing extremism). And of course, you cannot talk about the surge in right-wing terror without discussing Donald Trump, who famously refused to denounce white supremacy. But an overlooked source of the problem is that the Obama administration kowtowed to Republican lawmakers and talking heads as soon as they criticized a 2009 report sounding the alarm about the threat of right-wing extremism.

John Boehner: The Man of the House Never Did Man Up

John Boehner: The Man of the House Never Did Man Up

Beneath his blustering pretense of candor, the former Republican House Speaker is as craven and self-serving as ever.

    Mike Lofgren
    Apr 22, 2021

Since we're talking about the Republican Party and its descent into an authoritarian leader cult, we might as well invoke Godwin's Law straightaway. Suppose you were conversing with a German in the early postwar years, and the man said that he supported Hitler's policies, in fact he voted for him in 1933? And suppose he said the only thing that tore it for him was Hitler's personal conduct, and how the Fuhrer "abused the loyalty and trust" of supporters like himself?

You might conclude that the man had no more moral sense than a hyena, and that he only regretted the fact that things did not turn out well. Such thoughts passed through my mind on the publication of former Speaker of the House John Boehner's memoir, On the House. The mainstream political media, on the other hand, have mostly bought into the author's narrative frame that it's a book of unguarded truth-telling by a profane and hard-drinking Regular Guy.

The former speaker's cannabis pitch symbolizes how low too many of our craven, so-called public servants are willing to stoop for an almighty buck.

There was a time when, once they left the job, a former cabinet head or member of Congress would find employment back home casting their seeds of knowledge and experience in the local groves of academe. Or return to naps on the cracked leather sofa at his or her old law firm in South Bend or Twin Falls or Toledo.

But God bless America. Today, unless you're someone with the current White House on his or her resume or you're an official discovered to have committed a sin so heinous you not only make the evening news but Access Hollywood and the PBS Newshour, there's almost always a posh and profitable job waiting in Washington.

The Tracks of John Boehner's Tears

The former speaker of the House left Capitol Hill last year, but not for long. He's back as a star player for the lobbying industry and making a ton of cash.

    Michael Winship
    Sep 27, 2016

There are a few certainties in this world: fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, John Boehner's gotta cry. Remember how a year ago -- just a year ago -- the former speaker of the House wept when Pope Francis addressed a joint session of Congress? And then only a couple of days later announced he was stepping down as speaker?

There were tears then, too. In part, tears of joy, because Boehner no longer would have to deal with the Freedom Caucus, those tea party Republican bully boys who had been making his life miserable, threatening government shutdowns -- and Boehner's job -- at every turn. As deeply conservative as he is, Boehner nonetheless realized that even in a grossly dysfunctional Congress at loggerheads with the president, occasionally some modicum of bipartisanship had to come into play or the entire enterprise would go belly up. The Freedom Caucus found such a rational thought revolting.

The Paradox of Paul Ryan: Why the Tea Party's Right to Be Wary

Paul Ryan is the embodiment of the troika of money, power, and politics that corrupts and controls the capital

Only in a world where Cosmopolitan magazine can declare the Kardashians "America's First Family" and the multi-billionaire loose cannon Donald Trump is perceived by millions as the potential steward of our nuclear arsenal could about-to-be Speaker of the House Paul Ryan be savaged as insufficiently right-wing.

This is, after all, a man who made his bones in Congress and the Republican Party as an Ayn Rand-spouting, body-building budget-buster slashing away at the body politic like a mad vivisectionist, as well as an anti-choice, pro-gun zealot who never met a government program he liked (except the military, whose swollen budget he would increase until we are all left naked living in a national security state).

The Fast Track Fight Is Effectively Over: It's Happening

But the fight over the TPP and other corporate-friendly deals is just getting started

    George Zornick
    Jun 24, 2015

The Senate narrowly invoked cloture on fast-track trade legislation Tuesday morning, setting up a final vote Wednesday that will surely send the bill to President Obama's desk for his signature.

In so doing, Congress will surrender remarkable authority to Obama and his successors. For the next six years, Congress will be unable to amend any trade deal signed by the president, and only 50 votes will be required for Senate passage--a reduced burden that hasn't been granted to minimum-wage hikes, equal-pay legislation, gun control, campaign-finance reform, nor any other non-budgetary legislation of the Obama era.

Plan B: Ditch Help For Workers, Just Get Corporations What They Want

As a new GOP-led approach to approving Fast Track authority on behalf of the Obama administration materializes, the process itself signals just how noxious the contents of deals like the TPP must be

    Jon Queally
    Jun 17, 2015

Legislative maneuvering around Trade Promotion Authority (TPA or Fast Track) continued late Tuesday, as GOP leaders in Congress, the Obama administration, and a handful of anti-democracy Democrats hatched a plan to hold a straight vote on Fast Track--handing the White House the authority it wants to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership and other pending corporate-friendly agreements--while separating out a provision offering assistance to workers displaced by future trade deals.

It's not a simple or guaranteed path forward for Fast Track, but Politico explained the GOP leadership's latest approach this way:

Moyers & Company: Democrats, Not Just Republicans, Are Bowing Down to Wall Street

John R. MacArthur of Harper’s Magazine talks with Bill Moyers and argues that both major parties are abandoning the republic in pursuit of big bucks.

    Moyers & Company
    Dec 12, 2014

Negotiators from the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) were in Washington this week for a new round of talks which they hope will lead them closer to agreement on the trade deal. President Obama has called passage of TPP a "high priority."

This week, Bill speaks with outspoken veteran journalist John R. MacArthur, president and publisher of Harper's Magazine, about the problems with TPP, which is being negotiated in secret, behind closed doors. MacArthur says that the "free trade" agreement will take jobs away from Americans: "I guarantee you, this is a way to send more jobs [abroad], particularly to Vietnam and Malaysia."
