An Affront To Justice
Amidst our grim, slow slide into a police state where almost no one is safe comes a new report that ICE arrests of undocumented immigrants at once-sacrosanct courthouses just in New York state have risen a staggering 1,700% since Trump's coronation. The report from the nonprofit Immigrant Defense Project tells horrific stories of often already victimized people being dragged, tricked, tackled and brutalized by thugs of the state rapidly turning "courts into traps."

La Madre Buena (The Good Mother)
For a five-minute, heart-lifting hiatus from the madness, see this sweet film about a resolute Mexican mother who is clear on our president - "He is the devil" - but who loves her son enough to give him the birthday present he wants. Her epic trek, geographically and politically, features strong women, gorgeous country and the giddy decimation of a piñata just pleading, nay damn near demanding, to be punched.

The Fierce Urgency of Now
Oh, the gobsmacking tone-deafness of court clowns and grifters, from Kudlow's praise of workers "volunteering" for love of their fuhrer to Ross' bafflement that workers are going hungry from a mere "liquidity crisis." One proposal: When workers run out of food, they eat the rich. Another from the head of the flight attendants union: a general strike. In a scorching speech, she cited Dr. King's call to "stand up for freedom together,” insisting, "Labor can lead the way."

A Dream Where Our Differences Are Erased
Improbably, we found a welcome break from MAGA-hatted punks and the debacle of D.C. in Wichita, Kansas, where immigrant artists are breaking down barriers, celebrating disparate cultures, uniting Latino and African-American neighborhoods, and oh yeah painting the world's largest, wildest mural on grain elevators. The goal of the community project by Horizontes: "It's building that black and brown solidarity... telling our stories... reclaiming our space."

Israel Before Everything, Including Fundamental Humanity
In a shameless nod to depravity, Benny Gantz, former Israeli army chief and political rival to Netanyahu in April elections, has released campaign ads in which he brags of raining death and destruction on innocents. Complete with swelling music, aerial shots and a ticking body count, he proudly celebrates bombing Gaza "back to the Stone Age" and killing 2,200 Palestinians, mostly civilians - because in a country where the choice is between a fascist and a fascist, "Only the strong win."

Your Kids Are Watching
This year's Martin Luther King Day comes with the usual dose of cognitive dissonance - the hateful Mike Pence is quoting him?! - along with an added shot of racist punk privilege from a mob of MAGA-hatted white boys of Covington Catholic who swarmed, taunted and jeered a Native American elder because they felt they could. King knew there is nothing new under the divisive sun. "This wasn't boys being boys," said one critic. "This is America being America."

Feeding the Furloughed: Let Them Eat Teriyaki Chicken Sandwiches With Ginger Aioli
Tom-Joad-like, celebrity chef and Spanish immigrant José Andrés has opened a pop-up kitchen in D.C. to help feed thousands of federal workers being stiffed by the Man-Baby-In-Chief. Andrés' non-profit World Central Kitchen, which has fed millions of disaster victims in Puerto Rico and around the globe, served almost 10,000 meals in two days, with long lines of tearful, angry people grateful for a hot meal. Andrés' homespun, humane mantra: "What's good for you, must be good for all."

Trump Is Over If You Want It
Hey peeps, good news! The tinpot tyrant resigned on a napkin! He caved to a women-led, multi-racial grassroots resistance - sippy-cup sit-ins! a floof blockade! - and fled to Yalta, leaving Pence to a “clipped-duck” term as progressives celebrated 64 groundbreaking bills, from Green New Deal to Medicare for All. Sigh. In fact, the news comes from a fake Washington Post, aka The Yes Men, complete with action guide and “blueprint to help us reclaim our democracy.” Let it be, please.

As With Any Animal That Is Rabid: Bobby Rush Is Really Not Down With Steve King Or White Supremacy
We're glad that after Steve King's nine terms of racist vitriol, his GOP colleagues finally noticed he's scum and stripped him of power. Still, their disingenuous claim of having "no tolerance for such positions" is put to shame by fire-and-brimstone former Black Panther and Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush, whose language on King's "despicable comments" is as radical as you can get within Congress' genteel confines: "As with any animal that is rabid, Steve King should be set aside and isolated.”

Trash In Aisle 1600
Make it stop. When the NCAA championship Clemson Tigers came to be "honored" at the White House, they were met with tables of cold Big Macs and congealed french fries "catered" by the tacky POS in residence, who bragged it was "good stuff." "Nothing says full-circle-Americana like a white supremacist in a house built by enslaved Africans (hosting) predominantly black Clemson athletes exploited by the NCAA industrial complex (being) fed fast food." Word.
