Loathsome Repubs Clutch Hilarious Mock Pearls To Taunt Gun Violence Victims. Ha Good One!
At a hearing for a "red flag" law to keep guns away from those at risk to themselves or others, mothers of sons killed by guns tearfully avowed they "will carry this grief for the rest of our lives" as male New Hampshire lawmakers showed their disdain by sporting fake pearls; one also wore a large rifle pin. Moms Demand Action and many others were not up for the asshats: "Bitche s, we gave birth to you." "Don't start fights with moms," one wrote. "We are fighting for our children."

We Know What Hate Looks Like: Standing With Ilhan
Amidst the breathtaking hypocrisy of rabid charges of anti-Semitism - aka criticizing America's complicity with Israeli war crimes - heedlessly leveled against her, often from down-and-dirty bigots, Ilhan Omar is all done apologizing. As African-Americans, progressive Jews and others rally to support her, hear what she says above the ugly din: "When people say, 'You are bringing hate,' I know what their intention is. Their intention is to make sure that our lights are dimmed."

To Tell You the Story
Yannis Behrakis, one of the world's most respected photographers who chronicled with empathy "the best and the worst of humankind" in global conflicts and crises, has died of cancer at 58. Behrakis won multiple awards from his native Greece and internationally, including the Pulitzer for his coverage of the plight of refugees, for whom he sought "to be their voice." “My mission is to tell you the story," he said. “My mission is to make sure that nobody can say: ‘I didn’t know’.”

A Resolve Not To Do What Was Done To Him: Guantánamo Diary's Mohamedou Slahi Is Still Not Free
Having endured 14 years as "the most tortured man in Guantánamo," Mohamedou Ould Slahi has been denied a passport from his native Mauritania to seek medical treatment abroad for the effects of his detention and abuse - a refusal lawyers deem a brutal extension of "the extrajudicial punishment" of a man who was never charged with or convicted of a crime. Now "a prisoner in my own country," Slahi vows he "will get my rights peacefully" just as "everybody wants, my people and your people."

#AOC AOC's Superhero Inside Us
After her laser-like questioning of Michael Cohen to prep for going after Trump's taxes and other financial misdeeds, what better day to reveal "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force," a comic honoring the fierce AOC - a big comics nerd - as the standard-bearer for young lawmakers promising a progressive "new party." With a cover featuring a triumphant AOC, a felled elephant, and an anxious donkey, the project celebrates AOC as "a jolt of smelling salts to a comatose system.”

When We're Dancing With The Angels
The testimony of Michael Cohen - a loser with nothing to lose, a grimy reflection of Trump’s "venal and vicious world," an exemplar of Trump's "best people" who knows where the bodies are buried - was a sordid if cleansing spectacle. It was also, noted Elijah Cummings in his stirring summary, very painful. "As a country, we are so much better than this," he said. "When we're dancing with the angels, the question will be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact?"

This Moron Is the Only Emergency
Almost 60 former national security experts have written a letter declaring there is "no emergency that remotely justifies" Trump's move to build a wall. But - breaking news! - there's def an emergency, and he's it. In the last days, he publicly pouted about a term he didn't understand in trade talks - prompting snickering from Chinese officials - and described said officials as "from central casting" with this cringey gesture. Surely slanty eyes are next. Cohen, Mueller, Congress, please hurry.

Intrepid Journalism 101: Watch This Reporter Jump Over the Border Wall!
Bestowing hope on beleaguered journalists, 12-year-old reporter and publisher Hilde Lysiak faced down an Arizona cop who threatened to "have you arrested and thrown in juvey" for chasing down a tip on her bike - ie: doing her job. When she challenged his claim it was illegal to film him - not - he said he didn't “want to hear any of that freedom-of-the-press stuff.” Fans of her now-viral video tried to dox him, but she objected: "My focus is on protecting our First Amendment Rights. Thank you.”

Malcolm: We Want Freedom
This week marks 54 years since the assassination of Malcolm X, radical, orator, proud Muslim, evolving but abiding advocate and what Ossie Davis called "our own black shining prince," who rose from poverty to fight unwaveringly against racism until his death at 39. Rather than requesting civil rights, he demanded "God-given human rights" for people of color, declaring "our right on this earth to be a human being (in) this society...by any means necessary."

Their Worst Instincts: Alabama Newspaper Calls For the KKK To Ride Again
Because so much winning, another good ole bigot - with an actual bully pulpit - has crawled out of his cave to call for the Ku Klux Klan "to night ride again" and hang Democrats, "Republican Democrats" and "socialist-communists" with "hemp ropes to clean out D.C." The newspaper of one Goodloe Sutton has evidently long been "a cesspool of indefensible bilge." Hence, when asked about the propriety of his call, this defense of the Klan: "Well, they didn't kill but a few people." Thanks Trump.
