In Praise Of Jonathan Daniels and Ruby Sales: Greater Love Hath No Man Than This
This week marks what would have been the 80th birthday of Jonathan Daniels, Episcopalian seminarian, civil rights activist, witness and martyr after he took the shotgun blast from an Alabama racist meant for black teenager Ruby Sales. An "ordinary man who saw great evil and responded with love," Daniels was 26. Today, Sales upholds his memory and mission as theologian and advocate. "I didn’t carry his death as a burden of guilt or as a weight," she says. "I carried it as a commitment."

Lady Liberty Gets Probation
Patricia Okoumou, the Congolese immigrant who climbed the Statue Of Liberty last July 4th to protest Trump's evil child detentions, was given five years of probation and 200 hours of community service by a New York judge who warned she'd be jailed if she undertook another protest - which she says she fully intends to do. Okoumou, who came to court with her mouth taped to symbolize the threat to free speech, said she is "not a criminal," but is "frightened by this country's moral bankruptcy.”

The Only Hope Is To Be the Daylight
Belatedly, we mourn the passing of WS Merwin, master poet, fierce defender of justice and the environment, who has died at 91 at home on Maui, where over decades he and his wife built a palm forest "as fearless and graceful (as) the power of imagination and renewal." In language spare, grave, stirring, the much-lauded Merwin explored loss, war, nature and time's passage. Always, he gave thanks for the world, "dark though it is." Edward Hirsch: "He is like a great pine tree that has fallen."

Now, Now We Come Together
"Please Dad. Come Home," wrote Omar Nabi beside a courtly photo of his 71-year-old father Daoud Nabi, the first victim of 50 named in the Christchurch massacre. Amidst global responses both evil - Trump and other racist pols - and heartfelt - an outpouring of grief, grace and vows to ban assault weapons - Australian writer Waleed Aly's searing, mournful call rings out: "We are one community...Ev erything we say to try to tear people apart (or) set them against each other has consequences."

People Are Getting Busted For Committing Freedom Of Speech, Which Is Not A Good Sign
For the first time, Capitol Police have arrested a miscreant for projecting a message on a Congressional Building, one of many defiant dispatches by Bell Visuals that have included "BRETT KAVANAUGH IS A SEXUAL PREDATOR," "EXPERTS AGREE: TRUMP IS A PIG," and at his fave site Trump Hotel, "FELONS WELCOME." The latest display, in honor of lawmakers debating the Equality Act to protect LGTBQ rights, relayed the wildly inflammatory missive, "DISCRIMINATION IS WRONG."

Team Heckler: Liars Not Lawyers
A big bad day for egregious members of Grifters Inc. as Paul Manafort was hit with 16 shiny new pardon-proof state charges of fraud and slime by New York prosecutors just moments after he got more prison time in federal court. Emerging afterwards to speak to the crowd, his lawyer boasted the judge found "no evidence of any Russian collusion" - a brazen lie swiftly met with shouts of "That's not what she said!" from hecklers, aka much-needed, truth-telling patriots.

We Say, Let Us Live
With an indicted Bibi going full racist before the election - Israel now officially belongs to only Jewish citizens - his ethnic cleansing enterprise has seized a new "moral low ground" with record levels of Palestinian land stolen and homes demolished. The pace of destruction has surged in East Jerusalem, where Israel has added an uncommonly cruel twist even for them: Desperate Palestinians must destroy their own "illegal" homes, or face ruinous costs to have the oppressor do it for them.

Metalhead Kazoos: 1. Hate: 0
For Monday cheer, we celebrate hundreds of kazoo-playing, tutu-wearing "freaks, weirdos, misfits (and) people of good conscience” who attended a counter-party to drown out vitriolic Westboro Churchers protesting the existence of Danica Roem, Virginia's first open transgender legislator, and a metal singer. The event, organized by metal frontman Randy Blythe, was part of a #WestboroBackfire effort that raised $34,000 for Roem's reelection. Her response to WBC's venom: "Meh."

On Freedom of Speech and the Revenge of Individual 1
The Trump regime aptly marked International Women's Day by honoring 10 Women of Courage who conspicuously did not include Jessikka Aro, a renowned investigative Finnish journalist who has faced down death threats for exposing the Russian propaganda machine, was told she won the award, and was then told oops "regrettable error" after officials stalked Twitter and found she'd slammed our fragile leader - events she calls "deeply disturbing." Welcome to our world.

Picking Up Trash While Black
At this point, maybe we should celebrate. Somehow, nobody died after eight jittery armed cops in Boulder, CO confronted a black college student - scarily wielding a trash grabber and plastic bucket - as he cleaned up garbage outside his own house. The scene was filmed by his roommate, who was furiously, fruitlessly shouting "We fucking live here!" as the tension mounted. Just try to watch the video of life in a racist police state without your stomach churning and blood boiling.
