Signs of Intelligent Life in the Murdoch Universe
No one accuses the Wall Street Journal, icon of the business world, of devoting excessive column space to protection of the environment or public health. On the contrary, the WSJ has been an enthusiastic part of the artillery in the conservatives’ war on science and the EPA who they consider the epitome of evil, “job killing government regulation.” So I was startled to read this subheading of a major article in the WSJ on Nov. 8. Scientists Increasingly Link Vehicle Exhaust With Brain-Cell Damage, Higher Rates of Autism.

Obama: Drinking the Tea Party's Environmental Meltdown
The name of the 1979 movie China Syndrome has ever since been attached to a catastrophic nuclear reactor meltdown. But the name is better suited for what is evolving now in China, a new version of the China Syndrome; complete “environmental meltdown.” (If you haven’t seen the pictures go here .) China actually has decent environmental laws, but they are not enforced. Chinese industry and utilities are basically free to do as they p

Thank God We Averted "Disaster"
While the train wreck of the phony debt ceiling crisis occupied the media and voters for much of the last several weeks, public health and the environment were quietly being mugged in the back alley on Capital Hill by a ruthless gang of Tea Party Congressmen armed by a cabal of dirty energy corporations, chief among them Koch Industries. But this mugging will have permanent consequences for all Americans, including diminished quality of life, more cancer causing contamination of your water, dirtier air, poorer health, shorter life spans, and higher medical bills.

It's the Empathy Crisis, Stupid
I'm sure everyone reading this already knows that our "debt crisis" is a mirage, a canard manipulated by the radical right wing who are theologically devoted to allowing society's rich to become even more so. Our supposed spending problem is nothing more than a "We won't tax the rich no matter what" problem. The media has played along; Pres. Obama and many of the Democrats are also playing along. And the political barometer has taken yet another sharp lurch to the right.

Republican Preachers: Believing What You Know Ain't True
In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain makes a stinging observation on the overtly religious. “Faith is when you believe something you know ain’t true.” This is a perfect description of the religious asylum that is now the Republican Party and the tortured gospel they are spreading all over the country. Virtually the entire barnyard of their presidential candidates are preaching a mix of born again religious revivalism and brutal 19th century industrial capitalism, that they “know ain’t even remotely true.”

Obesity/Diabetes Epidemic: Rise of the Obesogens
The global obesity/diabetes epidemic is receiving wide spread attention like the June 26, article in the Washington Post by David Brown. One fourth of our national health care bill of $2.3 trillion is linked to the treatment of diabetes and its complications. Average American life expectancy is now dropping because of this disease complex. Even children are being recommended for gastric bypass.

America Becoming an Idiocracy
In the 2006 satirical science fiction comedy, Idiocracy, the protagonist Joe Bauers, “Mr. Average American", is selected by the Pentagon for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakens 500 years in the future, to discover a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive and their only hope for survival.

We're All Mad Here
As Alice (in Wonderland) stumbles upon the Matter Hatter's Tea Party, the Cheshire Cat greets her with "Come on in, we're all mad here." The Cheshire Cat should be posted at the door of the new House of Representatives. With the Republicans turning Congress into a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, first in line to receive the sentence of "off with their heads" are environmental regulations, the scientific community, if not the scientific method itself.

Criminal Neglect of Future Generations
When "snowmageddon" buried the nation's capital in February, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Ok) cheered on his grandchildren in building an igloo on the Capitol grounds and couldn't have been prouder of them in mocking Al Gore. But even the grandchildren of Congress's "Climate Denier-in-Chief" are likely to change targets for their mockery and scorn as it becomes obvious how grandpa has risked their own future.
