Nonviolent Demonstrations End and Military Occupation Begins in Suleimaniya Iraq
Today marks the fourth day since Azadi (Freedom) Square in Suleimaniya Iraq was violently overthrown by military forces following 62 days of primarily nonviolent protests against corruption by the two ruling parties, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) within the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). After demands to end corruption were not met, the demonstrators called for the resignation of the KRG president, Massoud Barzani, the Prime Minister, Dr. Barham Salih and the Speaker of the Parliament, Dr. Kamal Kirkuki.

The Least Reported Unarmed Revolution in the Middle East
Since February 17, 2011, military forces have fired indiscriminately into crowds of unarmed demonstrators. There have been hundreds of arrests, torture and disappearances of protest organizers, and empty promises made by government leaders. Amnesty International and Human Rights have intervened and word came from a reliable source that a phone call from US Vice President Joe Biden was able to pull government military troops off the streets and away from unarmed demonstrators.

Six Years Later: An on-the-Ground View of Iraq
As Iraq enters into the sixth year of war and occupation, there's been varied analysis from many different perspectives. I have been in Iraq every year since late 2002 until the present time working with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), an international human rights and violence reduction organization based in Chicago and Toronto. CPT lived outside of the Green Zone in Baghdad until 2006 when virtually no other foreign independent human rights group existed in the country.
