And Now Back to the Real Scandal at the NLRB
On Tuesday, the Senate voted down a Republican resolution that would have blocked the National Labor Relations Board’s new election rule, the latest in a series of recent GOP efforts to undermine the board. Now, attention has returned to the real scandal at the board -- the funneling of confidential information by GOP member Terence Flynn to groups involved in litigation and lobbying against the labor board.

End of the Road for the Employee Free Choice Act, Or Just the Opening Salvo?
On Tuesday the Senate voted 51-48 to end a Republican filibuster of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), which would strengthen workers' right to choose a union. The House of Representatives had already passed the bill by a vote of 263-146 on March 1. According to Senate rules, however, supporters of the legislation need a super-majority of 60 votes to "invoke cloture" ( i.e., to end the filibuster). Thus, Congress will likely take no further action on the bill until after the 2008 elections.

Tony Blair's Real Legacy: Minimum Wage and Union Recognition
On June 27th Tony Blair will stand down after a decade as Britain's Prime Minister. Unfortunately for Mr. Blair, he is now far more likely to win popularity contests on this side of the Atlantic, and most Britons consider the Iraq War to be the outstanding legacy of his period in office. One can understand why the voters who put Blair into office feel disillusioned with his foreign policy adventures and his government's mixed record on improving public services.

Who's Afraid of the Employee Free Choice Act?
The Employee Free Choice Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation being considered by the new Congress, yet many people have probably never heard of it. If they have, they have most likely heard the version that corporate America and right-wing want them to hear: that the bill would deny employees the right to vote in workplace elections and leave them exposed to coercion by unscrupulous union organizers. It's a good line, but nothing could be further from the truth.
