Journalists and Media: Stop Feeding the Right-Wing Spin Machine

Journalists and Media: Stop Feeding the Right-Wing Spin Machine

Reporters and pundits in corporate media act less like journalists and more like right-wing megaphones. This needs to stop.

Right after the right-wing extremists in charge of the Trumpian outfit masquerading as Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party succeeded in confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, Sen. Mitch McConnell spiked the football. The Kentucky Republican attacked the thousands of activists and citizen lobbyists who almost pulled off the improbable feat of stopping the confirmation by smearing them as a "mob" and claiming, without any evidence, that their activism was some kind "political gift" for the Republican Party.

And the media hand-wringing started almost immediately. The so-called impartial reporters and pundits in traditional corporate media outlets (hereinafter I will refer to them as "trad-media") immediately adopted McConnell's talking points in their ridiculous "both sides" frame. As Media Matters documented, "The Washington Post's analysis of the week concluded that Democrats and Republicans are equally at fault for divisive politics." The dean of Washington's "both sides" nonsense, Chuck Todd, agreed with right-wing pundits that both sides in Washington are taking part in the "vulgarization" of politics. These claims were made, naturally, without any viable data or evidence as support.

Ahead of Kavanaugh Vote, Trump Rebuked for "Disgusting" Last-Ditch Effort to Take "Women's Agency Away"

"We speak for ourselves, of our own volition, telling our own truths," said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL, in response to the president's Friday morning tweet. "For our freedom. For our future. Full stop."

Denigrating women nationwide in an unsurprising but still "disgusting" tweet on Friday morning, President Trump was met with immediate rebuke as angered opponents of Brett Kavanaugh asked the final undecided lawmakers--specifically Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ)--if this is the president was the kind of person and behavior they will be serving if they ultimately vote to confirm the historically unpopular Supreme Court nominee.

"The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad. Don't fall for it! Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs. Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love!" the president tweeted. He than added the hashtag: "#Troublemakers."

With mass protests on Capitol Hill Thursday afternoon and a procedural vote set for Friday, North Dakota's Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp has declared she is a firm "no" on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh, leaving Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) as the last remaining Democrat still on the fence against the historically unpopular and controversial Supreme Court nominee.

"The process has been bad but at the end of the day you have to make a decision and I have made that decision," Heitkamp told local radio station WDAY radio in Fargo, North Dakota. "I will be voting no on Judge Kavanaugh."
