Common Cause Urges U.S. House Members to Support Commission to Investigate January 6th Insurrection

Common Cause is urging every member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote "yes" on a bill to establish a 9/11-style commission to investigate the violent attack January 6th on the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

WASHINGTON

Common Cause is urging every member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote "yes" on a bill to establish a 9/11-style commission to investigate the violent attack January 6th on the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The letter notes that Common Cause plans to key-vote final passage of H.R. 3233 to create the "National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex" (H.R. 3233) in our next Democracy Scorecard, which we send to our 1.5 million members.

"The American people deserve a full accounting of the facts and causes--the truth--relating to the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol," said Common Cause president Karen Hobert Flynn. "The racist, violent mob subverted the peaceful transfer of power, marching through the halls of Congress with Confederate flags, bear spray, cudgels, and zip ties and causing multiple deaths in an unsuccessful attempt to overturn the presidential election. The assault on Congress as it met to certify the election was an attack on voters, especially Black and brown voters, who showed up in record numbers to cast their ballots in the midst of a global pandemic. We commend Chairman Thompson and Ranking Member Katko for their bipartisan leadership in crafting this legislation, and urge its swift passage so that the Commission can get to work immediately on an independent, bipartisan investigation and report."

Last week, the House Homeland Security Committee's Democratic chair and Republican ranking member reached an agreement on the creation of the commission to investigate the violent attack on the Capitol by the former president's supporters. The Commission's investigation will culminate in a final report to be released by December 31, 2021, with findings regarding the facts and causes of the January 6th insurrection, along with recommendations to prevent future attacks on our democratic institutions.
