General McChaos Is Canned; Times Square Bomber Blowback
Faisal Shahzad pled guilty to all ten counts of charges stemming from his failed terror attempt to detonate explosives in crowded Times Square on May 1. He said, “It’s a war” and that he was avenging the deaths of innocent Muslim women and children killed by US drone attacks in Afghanistan and Iraq. The guilty plea was heard in Federal District Court in New York on June 21. Shahzad was referring to the deadly drone attacks which have been doubled by President Obama over the number of attacks made by the Bush administration.

Ragheads, Rednecks and Greene Machines; Peculiar Politics in South Carolina
Peculiar politics in South Carolina is a never ending saga. On June 15, South Carolina Republican State Senator Jake Knotts of Lexington told the South Carolina Senate he is proud to be a redneck and would not resign from the Senate for having called Nikki Haley and President Obama ragheads. Immigrants R Us
The South Carolina Legislature is considering an anti-immigrant bill much like Arizona's draconian law. It requires police to check a person's residency status when stopped or detained for any reason and makes it a crime for illegal immigrants to solicit work. Opponents of the bill say it would lead to racial profiling, marginalize the state's Hispanic community and polarize the state. On May 28, people who oppose the bill dominated public comment before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee claiming it was un-American and racist.

A Slick and Slimy Killer
When I was a kid our family lived in Mobile, Alabama. We enjoyed the "fish jubilee" over on the Baldwin County side of Mobile Bay. This occurred when the moon and tide reached a certain alignment causing fish and crabs to swim up to the edge of the water, especially at night. By moonlight with small nets we scooped up flounder, red fish, trout and crabs teeming in the shallow water at the edge of the bay.

Terror Scare in Times Square
Was the botched terror attack in Times Square retaliation for US terrorism perpetrated by predator drones in Pakistan? Our war in Afghanistan and Pakistan is tremendously more expensive than such amateurish blowback attacks by sympathizers of al Qaeda or the Taliban. We have spent almost $270 billion on the war in Afghanistan.

Is Politics a Joke?
Politics is a joke, but the problem with political jokes is that too many get elected. It is ironically funny but politicians and diapers have one thing in common; they should both be changed regularly and for the same reason. --old political proverb Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber. --Plato

A Coal Miner's Catastrophe: Big Coal--Big Lies
The worship of money is the will of God according to Don Blankenship, CEO of Massey Energy Company that owns and operates the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia where 29 miners were killed on April 5 in a mining explosion. Blankenship is a member of the US Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and a rabid, right-wing Republican. Blankenship calls public officials concerned about climate change "greeniacs", says "greeniacs are taking over the world," and that Al Gore, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are "crazy". Our 'Long War' Is Not a 'Good War'
Tom Hayden visited Columbia, South Carolina last weekend, speaking at a University of South Carolina symposium on 1960s and 1970s student activism, attending a baseball game with the University's President Harris Pastides and holding a discussion with us at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of Columbia on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Banning War Toys
Inez Tenenbaum was unanimously approved by US Senators to chair the Consumer Product Safety Commission on June 19. She vowed to ban or toughen standards testing for several consumer products from China, including toys with lead paint. Inez's top priority should be banning war toys. War toys are products threatening the safety of people everywhere with or without lead paint.
