WASHINGTON

Win Without War released the following statement regarding Donald Trump's decision to cancel his upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un:

"It's disappointing that Donald Trump has canceled the upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. It's also not entirely surprising, given the Trump administration's incompetence, mixed signals about its intentions, and complete lack of preparation.

"The summit could have been a historic opportunity to finally put us on the path to achieve long-term peace and security on the Korean peninsula. But instead, Trump and his team have shown time and again that they're not up to the task of nuts and bolts diplomacy. Trump made a hasty decision to accept the meeting with Kim without proper planning, his administration continued its provocations and bellicose rhetoric, and now, he has cancelled the summit via an inane letter threatening nuclear war.

"At the same time, the diplomatic path is not dead. Diplomacy always takes time and effort, and setbacks are to be expected. Despite the cancellation of the summit, the United States should continue to work toward a negotiated solution that will rein in North Korea's nuclear program and bring an end to the conflict, by following South Korean President Moon Jae-in's lead.

"We can't forget that many in Trump's administration, including his National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, are thirsty for war. Their repeated threats of regime change in North Korea have contributed to the downfall of this diplomatic opportunity. The American public and Congress must prevent the Trump administration from using this self-inflicted setback to justify a catastrophic U.S. war of choice on the Korean peninsula."
