Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Applauds the Selection of Maya Wiley to Head The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights

WASHINGTON

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights on Tuesday named Maya D. Wiley, a longtime civil rights attorney and activist, as its new president and CEO. The following is a statement from Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law:

"Maya Wiley has the vision, skills, and relationships to lead the nation's premier civil rights coalition during a challenging time for the civil rights movement and our nation. Her thought leadership and ability to translate ideas into action are exactly what we need in these times. The Leadership Conference has chosen someone who has a demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of justice and equality. We applaud her selection and look forward to working with her to create a more just nation."

The Lawyers' Committee is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to enlist the private bar's leadership and resources in combating racial discrimination and the resulting inequality of opportunity - work that continues to be vital today.
