UltraViolet Calls for Trump to Be Removed from Office, an Investigation into Capitol Police Collaboration with Right-Wing Mob, and Remove of Members of Congress Who Took Part in Antagonizing the Mob

Women’s group says yesterday’s attack on the capitol is the dangerous physical manifestation of trump’s misogynist white grievance politics and an echo of past white supremacist mob violence.

WASHINGTON

In reaction to yesterday's white supremacist mob attack on the nation's Capitol, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, issued the following statement:

"Yesterday's mob attack on the US Capitol building was nothing short of an assault on our democracy by white supremacist, misogynists and other members of the alt-right coalition. It should be treated as the attack that it is, and those that encouraged, enabled, or took part in it, should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

"At the very least, treason, especially when directed by the President of the United States should be a fireable offense. He is unstable and through his actions makes every American - and especially women and people of color - unsafe. Trump should be removed from office immediately, so that he can not cause further violence.

"His enablers should similarly be held accountable. There must be a full investigation into why Capitol Police, who have shown extreme brutality towards peaceful protesters - including UltraViolet protesters opposing the nomination of a rapist to the Supreme Court - failed to effectively understand the threat and counter it. Officers shown either accommodating, or enabling, the attack on the Capitol should be fired immediately and prosecuted for their complicity in the attack on our nation.

"Members of Congress who aided and abetted this assault, who peddled the president's lies and conspiracies, and who attempted to erase the voices of tens of millions of voters who repudiated Trump at the ballot box, should face consequences for their treasonous and seditious actions and no longer have the honor of serving in the people's house.

"Yesterday's attack on the nation's Capital is the dangerous real-world manifestation of the misogynist white grievance politics that Trump and Republicans have fomented for years. While white mob violence directed towards people of color is nothing new in America, yesterday's attack should be a wake-up call to all Americans that real accountability is needed to start countering this dangerous alt-right extremism."

UltraViolet is a powerful and rapidly growing community of people mobilized to fight sexism and create a more inclusive world that accurately represents all women, from politics and government to media and pop culture.
