350.org on Potential Appointment of Joe Manchin to Energy Committee Leadership
WASHINGTON - In response to a potential promotion of Sen. Joe Manchin to the ranking position on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Julian Brave NoiseCat, 350.org US Policy Analyst offered the following statement:
“Joe Manchin could not be further out of step with his colleagues on the climate crisis, and shouldn’t be anywhere near leadership that determines our energy policy. As someone who took over a million dollars in fossil fuel industry donations, he’s the textbook example of a bought-and-paid-for politician -- we might as well give a coal executive that promotion. With our climate and communities at stake, our job is to push Congress to support a Green New Deal that puts millions of people to work building a 100% renewable energy economy for all.”
This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.
Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do.
350 is the red line for human beings, the most important number on the planet. The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth. But solutions exist. All around the world, a movement is building to take on the climate crisis, to get humanity out of the danger zone and below 350. This movement is massive, it is diverse, and it is visionary. We are activists, scholars, and scientists. We are leaders in our businesses, our churches, our governments, and our schools. We are clean energy advocates, forward-thinking politicians, and fearless revolutionaries. And we are united around the world, driven to make our planet livable for all who come after us.
